Fundamental Truths of Football Manager Live

This piece was originally posted almost two years ago on the FM-Britain forums. Sports Interactive has provided football enthusiasts with a quality simulation game for over fifteen years allowing those to experience the dream of managing their favorite club. Whether it be a top-flight side challenging for European glory or a lower division team struggling to keep competitive, the primary opponent has been the computer itself. FMLive turns this long standing convention on its head by eliminating virtually all semblance of AI-driven actions – almost every variable in your experience comes from a conscious human mind. Transfer interactions, contract negotiations, match…

Introduction To Football Manager Live: Webinar Wrapup

In conjunction with FM-Britain, this past Wednesday we held a live two-hour webinar as an introductory guide to Football Manager Live. Although many of our current readers & podcast listeners here are quite versed in the game, this webcast allowed us to expand to a fresh audience who may have just heard about Football Manager Live, but have never actually experienced the brilliance of the game’s core concepts. This presentation and live Q&A session allowed the present FMLive community to bridge this gap – hopefully, enticing others to give the game a shot for a month! A huge thanks to everyone who came out for it and supported us – from the experienced…

Applying Scarcity To Skill Specialization

This piece was originally posted almost two years ago on the FM-Britain forums. I believe it still applies today in Football Manager Live and explains a very fundamental point with any zero-sum game. I believe the skills have direct game theory implications. Although I don’t consider myself an expert on the exact nuances of this higher math, my poker-playing experience with game theory concepts I think relate to this discussion. In a situation where the same decision by any participant results in anything but the same outcome, an advantage is seen. In poker this is typically called “getting the best of it” where both the wagers of you & you opponent match,…

Building Your Gameworld Community: Part 2 – Competitions

This week, I want to show you how running friendly competitions in Football Manager Live can increase the interaction and competition between members of your gameworld. I am going to use to great examples from my own world, Nicholson. The Quick Cup This is a competition that I run, an eight-team knockout competition using a quick play format. Sounds quite dull, doesn’t it? Well, there’s a twist. The team which has won it the most times has their name put on the trophy. So instead of being called “The Quick Cup” you get “The Welsh Dragons Cup”. Now everyone has a reason to play, because the competition is well-advertised by me and the other two organisers,…

5 Tips for Unlocking Your Inner Luck in Football Manager Live

These days my only gaming hobby is Football Manager Live. Between being married and having a full time professional job as a software developer, my life is somewhat different now to the life I had when I was younger. I used to be a huge games buff, and have played a number of board and card games at tournament level, often with considerable prize money at stake. I’ve always aspired to improve myself at everything I do, and I’ve previously done a lot of research into games theory. I would like to discuss the concept of luck, as I know a lot of people struggle to deal with it in FML. I’ll keep the article focussed on examples and discussion, rather than the theory, so…

5 Tips for Realising the Power of Substitutes in Football Manager Live

I believe the value of substitutes in Football Manager Live is not fully recognised by many managers. Because players don’t tire or fatigue by playing too many matches and it’s all too easy to buy 11 great players and play with the same team/tactic match after match. However, I believe that substitutes in FML are incredibly valuable, beyond simply just cover for injuries. FML teams may not have the quality on the bench as teams do in real life, as squad depth isn’t really needed and financially it’s just impossible to have the kind of depth that exists at top real life clubs. However, it’s quite cheap and easy to pick up limited players who can be incredibly useful…

Building Your Game World Community: Part 1 – The Basics

This is the first in a series of articles aiming to be a tutorial on how to increase the interactivity of the users within your current gameworld. To prepare for this I asked around my world, Nicholson, for ways in which various managers like to interact with each other. Before I start, I would like to use a favourite FMLive relative phrase that I have heard many, many times. “You only get out of your gameworld what you put in” Every time I hear this I feel it is very, very true. When I started playing back at the start of the Saunders Game World I stayed quiet, not really knowing what to do, or who to talk to. I stumbled around for two seasons before scampering…
