I am of the belief that defensive midfielders are possibly the most important and underrated players in football. That probably translates to the Football Manager series too. Next time you watch a game (be it real or in FML), identify the defensive midfielder in a side and spot how involved he is in the team’s play. Their main job is to protect the back four. He will be the ‘middle-man’ between defence and midfield and is often given a role that encourages him to win back position. Also, the DM is usually the player to start of attacks. He will allow the more attacking players to use their creative heads, safe in the knowledge that there is someone there acting…
This week we continue looking at the processes which affect player progression, initially with a look at coaching skills and how they affect progress and then we’ll move onto any outstanding areas that haven’t been covered so far. Again I have used the extensive forum posts from coder Rob Cooper for the technical aspects. For those that have come late to this guide, part one can be found here. Coaching skills. Basically as described in the FML manual each level of each skill adds a 5% boost to player development. The total achievable boost through skills is 100%. Coaching Level 5 will add 25%, for youth players (age 21 or less) Youth Coaching level 5 will add an…
One of the major announcements made by Sports Interactive in the change list that has seen a lot of talk in the forums is this… – Added the capability to create game worlds full of fake players which should help to level the playing field between those with expert knowledge of the FM database and those without! It’s fair to say that the ability to create a regen-only GW has met with a certain amount of excitement. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this and instantly wanted one to open as soon as humanly possible. As a result, I was slightly disappointed to hear that Altobelli was confirmed as a Beginner gameworld when it opens it’s doors. Testing,…
With 1.2 practically upon us, I thought I’d highlight some of the updates and features that affect the player/scouting side to the game. – Made a change to the way wage demands are calculated so that now wage demand will drop more sharply the longer a player is a free agent (though there is still a minimum that a player will ever settle for depending on that player’s ability and reputation.) The importance of this feature is obvious to anyone who has trawled through the free agent list and spotted lots of older players rotting away without a club. While many of them would still be top players, it’s often the case that people don’t see them as a good short…
Player Progression – Part 1 The Definitive Guide This article will endeavour to provide a definitive (or almost) guide to player progression. Having researched a multitude of forum posts from coder extraordinaire Rob Cooper, I think there is now sufficient information to answer the vast majority of questions people have about the youth progression system utilised in FML. In addition I will briefly cover some of the plans that are being considered for future upgrades that will have an impact on this area of the game. Avoid the green boot like the plague ! Rob Cooper So let’s start with space. Each club in FML has room for 50 players to train. Training…
Player regeneration is one of the keys that make FML such an intriguing long term prospect, the unknown factor of player development is what keeps the majority of long term players involved. Since FML began all game worlds have started with a slice of SI’s latest real player database, approximately 50,000 players per world. These players are all real players from real teams somewhere in the real world, and the fact they are known in real life makes many of them very attractive to all types of players. Once a game world has launched though it cannot have it’s player database updated, so it needs to grow on it’s own for the longevity of the world. This occurs…
What makes a good full-back? In Football Manager Live, it is often considered that full-back is a position that you can get away with having an average player for. That may be the case, but if you want to be a great team and want to nullify the threat of those world-class wingers, a good left/right back can be a massive advantage. There are two types of full-backs that you are likely to come across. You’ve got your ‘Patrice Evras’ of the world and players like ‘Giorgio Chiellini’, who can often play as a central defender, too. The former example will have brilliant attacking instincts, often with brilliant pace. They have a habit of bombing forward with…
Everyone knows that a team needs a good backline to have any success and that is no different in Football Manager Live. Goalkeepers are the last line of defence and, like a top-class striker, they can win you games. There are two attributes that I believe are a must for a good stopper – Handling and Reflexes. Without having those to at least a decent level would probably render them pretty useless. Of course, that isn’t to say that as long as they have high Handling and Reflexes that nothing will ever get past them. It is about recognising the ‘package’ of attributes that the keeper has to offer. Another attribute that is vital is Positioning. As you can…
