Evaluating Long-Term Strategies For Success

One of the things I’m most excited about with the re-launch of Football Manager Live is that it appears as though the game is being structured people building up to long term success. This has always been my preferred method and having been in Fowler since the launch originally back in 2008, I was confident I knew how I was going to play the game after re-launch, now I’m not so sure. Let me explain, but first a bit of background. The Path to Enlightenment When Fowler launched, it was the first time I’d played Football Manager Live. Unlike some of the guys who’d been in beta, I was a total newbie. Thankfully, I’d read an awful lot about the game mechanics…

Is Only Having A Youth Team Right?

Through the GameWorldOne mail bag, we got this interesting message from Stephen Westrip in GW Lineker. Youth managers – are they destabalising the game worlds in Football Manager Live? There have been a few teams in my GW, Lineker, that have ‘gone youth’. But in the end this will surely skew certain aspects of the gameworld. These managers are prepared to pay much higher wages for a youth player then managers that have to balance their wage budget with senior and youth squads. The official FA competitions also get skewed as these managers usually enter their youth teams into senior comps and quite often do not do so well, allowing other teams more easier victories and…

5 Things You Need To Know Before Going Into Youth Management

Typically, youth academies around the world serve two purposes. They develop players for the first team; and they generate cash through selling talent to other clubs. In order to do this, there are a number of things you should consider and plan before spending money on a youth side. How you respond to these could shape your clubs financial and sporting future. 1. You will not produce a conveyor belt of talent. If you go in to youth management expecting to create a team of superstars or generate millions in surplus cash, you’re in for a rough ride. Unless you know exactly what you’re doing and get a huge dollop of luck along the way, chances are that you’re going…

What makes a good attacking midfielder?

Attacking midfielders are the catalysts of every teams attacking line. They link midfield with attack and have the creativity and vision to see gaps in the opposition’s defence. So, having a good one should mean that you have an added dimension to your team’s attacking play. An AM needs specific attributes to unlock those defences. Two of the key ones are Passing and Creativity. If they lack Creativity, team-mates won’t be spotted as easily by the player and he will be less likely to do something ‘a bit special.’ However, if they have high creativity but can’t pass, then the ball won’t reach your attackers in the first place. As with the majority of…

What makes a good centre half?

Central defenders are the heart and soul of every team and are one of the most important aspects to your club. Get two of them and you will go a long way to getting those all-important ‘shut outs.’ Generally, there are two typical kinds of centre back – the powerhouse hard-man and the athletic type. Real life teams often build a foundation on top class partnerships, with these two types of defenders often capable of complementing each other perfectly. A real life example of this would be what many consider the best defensive partnership in England (if not the world) – Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic of Manchester United. I’ll use these examples to compare with…

5 Of The Best Players – Wonderkids

To kick off our occasional new series “Five of the Best” here at GW1.com, I’ll be introducing you to five of the best players within the Football Manager Live database. Simples! So the first one I’ve decided to go for is wonderkids. This list will include some of the finest kids on the game. I’m going to try to have a variation of different positions too, so don’t be surprised if a huge name player is missed off the list. You can just comment on the article and tell me how stupid I am for missing them out! Miralem Pjanic Pjanic is now a name that is instantly recognisable to recent FM/FML players and Lyon are hoping his stature will rise in real life,…

An Issue With Regens & Player Development

In this recent post on The Fernandez GW Blog, Tanel Tursk comments on the crisis in quality regens in the live gameworlds and asks what that holds for the future of FML’s long-term playability. I and obviously many other managers are quite convinced that for FML to be able to hold gameworlds that go on for more than 10 seasons, the regen model needs a huge fix: and that should really be the main issue for the game developers. In this recent post on the official forums, I gave my view on this issue. It does not really take a Einstein to see how every gameworld gets fewer and fewer quality players over time. There are many reasons for that; but I think solutions…

Filtering your way to the top

The ‘filter’ system in FML (and indeed the last few iterations of it’s older brother Football Manager) is an aspect of the game that is hugely powerful yet underrated at the same time. Filters can narrow down pretty much every aspect of a player/club/manager search you could think of, and it’s frequently expanded. But, how many of you would think of the filters and say they are one of the most important aspects of the game? The intention of this article is for you to understand the full possibilities of this feature and hopefully get the most out of it. Common Search Filters If you can use the filters well, you immediately have an advantage in the transfer…
