Football Manager 2010: A Preview

So finally the time has come – the Football Manager 2010 demo has been released to the world, and the baying masses have their chance to troll on the Sports Interactive foru… what’s that, you say? There’s no trolling? It’s actually really very good? But… but… that’s not how things work! The rampage on the official forums is an annual ritual. SI release a game, the vast majority love it, and the vocal minority pick it apart claiming every minor fault is the end of the world – it’s just how things are done. Rather, it’s how things used to be done; this year Sports Interactive promised us polish – and that is exactly what has been delivered:…

FM 2010 – What’s Got My Attention?

Why am I writing about Football Manager 2010? Those that follow my other articles and even my threads on the official forums are probably aware it’s not a game I play, not something that captures my interest. Ok, so I downloaded the Football Manager ‘09 demo and played with it for a day, but as I couldn’t convince anyone at Sega or Sports Interactive to send me out a free copy that was the extent of my exposure to it. I find Football Manager Live a far more rewarding game on a number of levels, and apart from a week without an internet connection, I haven’t looked at FM in almost 2 years. The easy answer, I guess, would be to say I’m writing a review about…

FM2010 Pre Release Reviews

There’s no question, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for 15 years, that the Football Manager series has innovated the genre of sports simulation games. Not only that, Sports Interactive has continually and consistently raised the bar for themselves each and every year to produce a fresh product that greatly expands the scope of the previous FM release. This time, Football Manager 2010 may just be the version that ends up being too hard to actually top. According to MCV, it’s been predicted by SEGA that FM2010 will be the biggest PC release in Q4 of this year. Due to hit the shelves on October 30th, the company is putting a significant amount of money and…

Match Engine FM2010 and FML v1.3

Several weeks ago I took a look at the changes made to the match engine since the launch of Football Manager Live, keeping in mind the launch version of the match engine was a hybrid of that used in FM08, the first article Match Engine Preview 1.3 – Part 1 discussed the changes made between there and the FM09 engine. Following that we moved on to the changes made since then in Match Engine Preview 1.3 – Part 2. As mentioned in that second article, each ‘version’ of the match engine is added to all those that have gone before the changes bringing us to the Football Manager 2010 Match Engine include all that was mentioned in both of those articles along with…

Video From FML’s Big Brother (FM2010)

In a recently released video by Football Spy as part of the Daily Mirror, we get a short introduction to new features included in this year’s Football Manager 2010 release. This segment at just under four minutes showcases Miles Jacobson, Sports Interactive Studio Director as he shows the community his relative lack of skill at pool and among other things, how to properly hide a uni-brow when associating with the press. Highlighted features as announced on this video: New match engine with upgraded graphics and animations, including stadiums and crowd atmosphere. New tactics creator with more football-based instructions in addition to the classic…

Data Capture: An effective development tool for FML or an intrusion of privacy?

The advances of information technology in the 21st century has allowed unprecedented access into the everyday lives of the general public. Websites, iPods, cell phones, PDAs, social networking tools, e-mail, credit card transactions, all electronic devices and services you can think of are more or less collecting precise data on the habits of it’s users. This data, after compiled together over a large cross-section of users, is one the most highly sought after pieces of information for consumer-based businesses. “This system… collects information about your computer hardware specification. It doesn’t ask for, or store, any personal information at all – just…

Football Manager Live and FM

Let’s put one myth to bed. Playing the AI in Football Manager Live is not the equivalent of playing Football Manager 09. It just isn’t. It might be annoying to you, it might go against the ethos of Football Manager Live, but it is not, never has been nor could ever be comparable. I can’t cover every difference in a short column like this. But I can shed some light on some of the subtle, but important tactical issues that arise in a MMO vs a computer simulation. It may be the same match engine as FM1, but there is far more to consider when setting up your side. This is, I must admit, a theoretical piece this week. I can’t really offer many concrete tips, but…
