Reaching Goals In FMLive: My Restart Challenge Story

Well it’s been an exciting season for sure. Let’s rewind to what happened after my first day after restarting, what my goals were, whether I achieved them and what I achieved over the season. Firstly let me just sit on the fence for a second… restarting is not the same as starting with a new account. When you start a new account you do not have the skills, so I had six seasons worth of skills so in theory around six months ahead of anyone brand new. That said, the difference would not be as great as you think as the top level skills don’t take as long to reach as to learn – so this means that I’ll always be ahead of someone new but difference in learnt skills could…

How Does Football Manager Live Compare To Other MMOs? (Part 3)

The more interesting GamesIndustry discusses the idea of starting at 110% rather than the slow and sure approach with MMOs: “Most MMOGs launch with queues to access their servers – worse again, many of them then end up offering players barren, half-empty servers when the player population falls after the first few months.” Lump in throat I read on… “The game service operator then faces an extremely tricky balancing act. Too few servers will result in enormous queues for the game, which frustrate and upset players – not a good move when your business model relies on them being so pleased with their experience in the first thirty days that they’ll happily…

How Does Football Manager Live Compare To Other MMOs? (Part 2)

Firstly, from an article on BrightHub: “Where Did Warhammer Go Wrong” caught my attention. The main point being the obvious, need enough gameplay variety to entertain hundreds of thousands or millions of different people. They must be amused enough to maintain a subscription.” It’s funny that the same opinions voiced in the Football Manager Live official forums are voiced as a general statement elsewhere. The newest match engine is now in FMLive. Now people are turning their heads to changing their online experience to keep them online for longer. Keep people interested so that they stay on for longer will result in people playing more Human vs Human…

How Does Football Manager Live Compare To Other MMOs? (Part 1)

Start making a game and stop listening to idiots… It’s not often that I don’t have an opinion about something and this original thread started by Goodyscot, caught me: “In seeking to please the vocal minority you’ve managed to alienate and ignore every lesson you should of been learning from other MMO’s”. What do I actually know about MMOs? My answer, not very much. To explain how I got started in Football Manager Live, when at university I was in halls with about 9 other like-minded friends. We would regularly get together over a few beers, get CM97/98 out and press “done” for hours at a time. Each of us had our own team, player searches would cause an…

Let The Battle Commence: My Restart Challenge Story

It all started off with following Jordan Cooper on Twitter. He said he was restarting in Football Manager Live to walk the walk following his post about how easy it is to start in an old gameworld. I considered the potential of a “Restart Football Association”, which would be much the same as transferring game worlds, so could be called the “Pro FA”. I was thinking about how if loads of people restarted and then were put into the same FA as new starters to the GW, then it would prove a fairly positive welcome party. Maybe a new Pro FA created each off-season for people to join and then there was a more developed FA for people to ascend to when reaching 3 star…

On The Forums: If You Can Have One Feature

It’s been an interesting experience on the official forums this week. The honeymoon period of v1.3 launch and a little bit of silence was broken by a small angry mob of subscribers saying that the new match engine (ME) in Football Manager Live had problems and that they wish it was more like Football Manager 2010 instead, as this is more realistic, although there was some humble pie eaten upon the revelation that the demo version of FM2010 has exactly the same match engine as FML v1.3. On the positive, I thought that I’d concentrate this week on the thread “If you could have one feature…” started by Robson Brown (Rb). I have tried to keep it to new features and not…

The Head-Vs-Head Dilemma: Keeping A Balance

Firstly, for the record, I do prefer playing human vs human (HvH) games over playing human vs offline teams in Football Manager Live. Though the new match plans are much better than playing offline teams before v1.3, but nothing beats the in-game banter. I’m not a GLM8-GGWP robot. I like to have between three and five games per day to play, on average, to keep me busy when online. I log on fairly regularly to set up & enter enough competitions over the course of a season. Some days I’ll be on “catch up” with red games and sometimes I’ll have a bit more time to dedicate to other tasks. On average, it’s about right. I search through the FA comps and Super FA…

On The Forums: Quick Hitter Edition

Not a whole lot to say in a preamble for this week. Hoddle, my game world has just finished season six, so I’m preoccupied in getting stuff sorted in good time. For now, I’ll leave you with my fave five ideas threads from the official forums in the last week. Enjoy! Organising Bookmarks Original post by Phil Macklam This was mentioned a while back. Bookmarks are a great way of using singular clicks to get to a destination. You can add a new bookmark by going to the “pages” tab and then “adding bookmark”. As long as you have the bookmarks bar activated you can then see a list of all your bookmarks and can use the F-keys as a further shortcut. There is however only…
