“I want you to share my excitement at the discoveries, past and present, which have revolutionized the way we think. From the Big Bang to black holes, from dark matter to a possible Big Crunch, our image of the universe today is full of strange sounding ideas, and remarkable truths. The story of how we arrived at this picture is the story of learning to understand what we see.”
Hawking was of course talking about the real world, but a similar process of evolution takes place in the virtual worlds of Football Manager Live. From the launch of the first alpha world and throughout the initial beta phase FML has seen many changes already, but the constant development guarantee that accompanies the FML ideology will be a journey of discovery that will encompass its own array of strange ideas and remarkable truths.
So what is the constant development ideology, what does it mean to a computer game?
In its simplest terms it means that FML will be an ever changing game, constantly updated not only to add new features and objectives, but also to respond to the desires of the ever-growing community and to the way they envisage the game should progress.
“FML is intended to be a ‘living’ entity, constantly developing and changing. This is true of our teams, and our user base, and it is in keeping that it should be the case with the game itself. Thus in FML, you are never more than a few months away from a complete set of new features covering a wide range of areas.”
The online manual covers a brief outline of the development model and how it has been used to date, through use of a number of forums dedicated to various areas of the game the developers have both the opportunity to respond to user concerns about the games direction, and also the ability to workshop various ideas about future modifications with a collective of experienced and passionate members of the game’s community.
Only time will tell if it’s a truly sustainable model for a gaming environment, but if the current levels of constructive communication between users and developers is anything to go by then FML looks to have a long and bright future ahead.
As a long term beta tester and live world moderator I have comprehensive access to a large portion of the SI forums and through this column I will attempt to keep you updated on the future developments planned for the game, but also offer insights into the way the community has been involved in the creative and evolutionary aspects of those developments. Football Manager is a game based around football teams and matches, Football Manager Live offers so much more……..
I want you to share my excitement at the discoveries, past, present, and future which will revolutionize the way we play!
